On June 16, 2022, Barrie formally earned the prestigious title of Nature Canada's 15th Bird Friendly City.

The Belted Kingfisher

The City held an online vote to determine the public's choice for Barrie's official bird. On May 11, 2024, World Migratory Bird Day, Barrie's official bird was announced: The Belted Kingfisher.​
